The Power of
Creativity and Art
Bright minds have been creating since the beginning of time. Ideas build on ideas which create society and culture. It is so deeply ingrained in our lives we often take it for granted. It is as necessary as food and fire for without creativity those things would not have been brought into reality. The creativity of man is one of the most human things about us and yet not human at all.
The most famous book in the world began with creativity:
βIn the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.β
Genesis 1:1
Through the creativity of art and storytelling we can begin to make sense of our world. We can understand and partially experience things that we might never have been able to comprehend.
From the time of Adam and Eve the creations and imaginations of man have formed us, carved our future, and have preserved our past. Each unique culture and people have used their creativity to build the world around them. One of the ways we understand countries and people of the past is through their art and how they created and expressed themselves. For some that is all that is left of their legacy and history. Though the art of the Native Americans on old red rock or the detailed carvings of the Romans in Italy are from a time long since past, we can still find connection and meaning in these pieces of preserved art.
With each culture comes different and unique art but the same could be said backwards. The unique creativity and art of a people builds their culture. Without this difference in creativity we would all be very similar. We would lose our ability to be ourselves and think for ourselves. The agency or man and the creativity of man walk hand in hand, for what is the point of making choices if there are no choices to be made.
It is a God given gift to create and imagine that the devil Lucifer tried to take when he proposed that we live with no agency. With the power of creativity we can draw close to God but also push him away with our actions. When we are using the creativity of God righteously we can become as similar to Him as is possible in this life as He is the Great Creator. βAll things were made by him; without him was not any thing made that was made.β -John 1:3.
Because of our creativity we can do all we imagine for good but we can also do all we imagine for bad. This is a choice, some might say the choice of life. God wants us to use our knowledge and creativity for the better. To help and lift others and to build a greater place for His children. Even so he will not impede or control our creativity and actions during our experience on this earth or He would be no better than the devil.
The seemingly simple facts about God are often best told in a creative way, in paintings, parables and symbolism. Our minds may not be able to understand the incredible mysteries and mercy of God at this point in our lives but we can understand the story of a young prodigal son returning to his father after years of separation and rebellion or of a beloved lost lamb rescued by his shepherd. These very simple human experiences in some magnificent way can show us the grander and more beautiful picture of our relationship with our Creator.
Art and creativity take moments, ideas and experiences and turns them into understandable and relatable forms such as writings, paintings, and teachings. With these artistic expressions we can connect across cultures, time, and even religion.
